Writers’ Retreat

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

July 11-15, 2011

Sponsored by Asia Theological Association and Langham Partnership Publications

This specialised workshop is for Asian writers who are preparing their manuscripts for publication but need guidance on style for maximum readability, as well as help to find a publisher.

This workshop will be limited to a maximum of 16 writers from the Middle East, Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong and Korea.

Tutorial guidance will be offered by

Julie Belding, MA Hons, BTheol, assistant editor for the Asia Bible Commentary series and current editor of LiFT magazine

Isobel Stevenson, MEd, senior editor for Langham Partnership International and Piquant Publishing, copy-edited the Africa Bible Commentary and is training the editors for the one-volume South Asia Bible Commentary.

Daily Programme The retreat will begin on Monday afternoon, July 11, and conclude on Friday evening, July 15.

Mornings (Tuesday through Friday)

  •  8:30 Worship and devotional
  • 9:00 A 30-40 minute tutorial/discussion on some aspect of writing


Rest of day Writing, revising and individual mentoring

Evenings Discussions and/or lectures on publishing-related topics

To apply, each applicant must supply, in advance:

  •    a personal CV
  • a 250 word summary of the book they are working on
  • a Table of Contents
  • about 2000 words of text from their manuscript

Those invited to participate include

  •  writers of the 50-volume Asia Bible Commentary series
  • faculty from theological schools
  • church and lay leaders


Accommodation will be provided at the Malaysia Bible Seminary (www.mbs.org.my) at its peaceful Recreation and Training Centre. This is at Kundang, Selangor, about 45 minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Participants must book their own flights, but air fares will be subsidised up to $500.
